ELA 9 - Students have been working hard on creating an original myth. They have to think 'outside the box' and use their imaginations :)
HLTH 9 - We are working on a Career Ed unit for the next while in Health class. Today we looked at the topic of "Possible Selves". This is an activity where we look at our future and see our hopeful selves, and our feared selves.
SOC 9 - We used this class to study for our Roman Empire Unit test which will be on Wednesday, December 15th.
SOC 10 - After spending some time looking at the topic of feminism and women's rights in Canada we viewed several videos from 1967 that discuss the progress of rights for women in Canada. We will be having our unit test on Thursday, December 16th.

ELA 9 - We are finished reading The Loki Wolf!!!! Students had a chance to work on their chapter questions, which we went through in class, and they also received a review for their test which will be later this week, perhaps Friday.
PAA 8 - The grade eights helped the drama club today by whipping up some Italian bread for Act 24 this weekend! Thanks!

ELA 9 - We are working very quickly at finishing The Loki Wolf. The novel will be finished early next week and a final assignment and test will be given soon.
HLTH 9 - We studied for our addiction test which will be on Thursday, Dec. 9.
SOC 9 - I showed some pictures from a previous school Europe trip to Rome to show the archtiecture and interior decorating in Roman buildings. We will soon be done this unit!

ELA 9 - We have been working away on our Loki Wolf novel study the past few classes. We are currently done reading chapter 15 and the chapter questions are due for tomorrow's class.
HLTH 9 - We are now working on a gambling section in our Addictions unit. We read some basic information on what a gambling addiction is, the ways people may take part in gambling, and problem signs. We also watched a short video based on this topic.
SOC 9 - After finishing up going through the information on our Ancient Rome jigsaw, we had a quick review game.
SOC 10 - We have been discussing the issues of pluralism and interest groups. Students had questions to work on and also did a response based on the topic. They will have a bit more time tomorrow's class to finish up their political party assignment.

ELA 9 - Yesterday was a SADD fundraiser that had a student teach a class. SOC 10 - Students started a project today based on creating a political party, sharing its ideologies and the political spectrums it falls under.

SOC 10 and CND 30 - Yesterday afternoon, both Social Studies classes had a chance to take part in a presentation on residential schools from four individuals who have either attended a residential school, or had parents who did. Through videos, and sharing of personal stories, students had a chance to understand what trials and tribulations many First Nations people of Canada had to deal with in their past and how it lingers into today's generations. A very informative, and emotional presentation, that was eye opening for all.

*** On Monday grade my 10 and 12 Social Studies students will be spending the afternoon listening to three First Nations elders who will be sharing their knowledge and experience of Residential Schools.

HLTH 9 - After debriefing our Take Our Kid to Work day experiences, the students had a chance to make Thank-You cards for the locations they went to.
SOC 9 - This class was spent on a an assignment that dealt with the government and leadership in Ancient Rome. This is due for Monday, Nov. 8th.
SOC 10 - We spent some time putting together our rough drafts of economic letters from unit two. The rest of class was spent on discussion of Canadian Issues.
CND 30 - After an awesome discussion on the Brown Eyed/Blue Eyed Experiment and the topic of racism and discrimination, students did a response on nature and nurture and applied the topics to their own lives. This is due tomorrow!

CND 30 - We watched a video called "A Class Divided" concerning the topic of racism and an experiment with her grade three class in 1968 after the death of Martin Luther King Jr. To teach her students about racism and discrimination, Ms Elliot had them take part in a Blue Eyed Brown Eyed Experiment. ELA - We have been spending the last few classes working on Remembrance Day topics. We are looking for images to use in our Remembrance Day Program slideshow. Ms. Sastaunik has also been very helpful in sharing information and pictures with us on the late Prescott Shipway who was killed in Afghanistan in 2008. Mr. Shipway's parents are neighbors with Ms. Sastaunik and she has some very touching stories and thought provoking pictures to share.
HLTH 9 - We have been working on our Drug Fact Sheet assignment for the last two classes. We will have a little more class time to finish this assignment up.
SOC 9 - The last two classes were spent on the legend of the creation of Rome: The Story of Romulus and Remus. Students are creating a comic story strip retelling the story. We again, will have a bit more time to work on this assignment.

Early Dismissal!
ELA 9 - This morning for language study we worked on verb tense. We also did a quick quiz on quotations. We worked yesterday, also, on creating a final draft of our story starter/ender for "Acceptance"
PAA 9 - We started sewing tests today. Students are still working on sewing patterns.
SOC 9 - We looked at the language of ancient Rome (Latin), and did some geography work, mapping out the areas the Roman Empire covered.
PAA 8 - We are done unit two and start our first cooking lab next day (Monday). We are making salads.
SOC 10 - Students are expected to have their "Analyzing the Numbers" assignment done for Friday. We also started looking at economic systems and will be starting a writing assignment based on that.
CND 30 - We looked at the standard of living of Canada. Students had three questions to do in response to the stats we looked at during class. This is due on Friday.
PAA 9 - We started sewing tests today. Students are still working on sewing patterns.
SOC 9 - We looked at the language of ancient Rome (Latin), and did some geography work, mapping out the areas the Roman Empire covered.
PAA 8 - We are done unit two and start our first cooking lab next day (Monday). We are making salads.
SOC 10 - Students are expected to have their "Analyzing the Numbers" assignment done for Friday. We also started looking at economic systems and will be starting a writing assignment based on that.
CND 30 - We looked at the standard of living of Canada. Students had three questions to do in response to the stats we looked at during class. This is due on Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!
ELA 9 - Today students handed in their "On the Sidewalk Bleeding" questions which they did on Friday. They also read a short story called "Kath and Mouse" today with a partner doing a reading strategy called "Say Something". We had a discussion based on the story.

ELA 9 - We went to the lab to work on our final drafts of our 'Borders' paragraph and then typed up a rough draft of our story starter/ender for 'Acceptance'.
HLTH - We started our addictions unit today by talking about addictions and watching a video that explains how addictions often happen.

ELA 9 - We once again worked on our Family Influence Projects. The rough drafts of these, if not done already, are due TOMORROW. Students have been making some great progress on these projects. Tomorrow we will be working on CAT-4 tests.
PAA 9 - After a quick review on the parts of the sewing machine, students started to wind some bobbins and learned how to thread the top of the machine!
SOC 10 - We worked on a Nigerian roleplay today. Will finish this tomorrow. Unit One Test in on Thursday, Sept. 30th.

Wacky Hair!!!!!
Today was Wacky Hair day... some fabulous dos!
ELA 9 - We spent the last two classes working on our Family Influence project. Students are creating either a poster, album, or digital essay on a family member who has influenced them and shaped their lives. Tomorrow family trees are DUE!!
HLTH 9 - Yesterday we worked on actions plans. This is the last topic for unit one and we will soon be having a test.
SOC 9 - Students watched some videos on ways we know about history. They also worked on a Canadian Worldview assignment.

Today SRC's WOW (Week of Wow) activity was SPEW. Alka - selzter and 7 - Up......
ELA 9 - After correcting our question on "Borders" we worked on our descriptive paragraph for the mother of the story. Students also received their "Family Influence" assignment today, which many of them started.
PAA 8 - Once we were done our kitchen scavenger hunt we worked on a kitchen tools worksheet.

Week of Wow Starts: These Kids Wear Crowns!!!

This noon hour we had an awesome chance to see These Kids Wear Crowns perform at LHS. TKWC have been opening for Hedley on their past tour and they rocked the LHS gym for all to enjoy!!!! Check them out at:

SOC 9 - After correcting our time and culture questions we looked at some case studies dealing with the topic. We looked, also, at ways we know about history be doing a brainstorm.
SOC 10 - After discussing sentencing circles we went to the lab to finish our handouts on the Canadian Government.
CND 30 - In small groups we worked on coming up with possible focus questions for a dialectic based on Aboriginal and European contact. We then corrected our questions on French-English relations.

SOC 10 - Students spent time in their "expert" groups today researching information on the Canadian government and how decisions are made. These will be finished up tomorrow in class and presented to their peers.
CND 30 - We spent time going through our timeline posters on the effects of First Nations - European contact. Students highlighted important info in their handouts. We then started our next issue of English-French contact by working on questions which will be due tomorrow!

Happy Friday!!!
ELA 9 - Today we went through "The Jade Peony" questions and turned them in. We then started our Family Roots assignment. Students started organizing the family information they found into a program called Inspiration 8. From here they will either create a large family tree or a photo journal. Any students who do NOT have any information need to have some by Monday. Check family history books, ask parents, contact grandparents or other family members.

International Literacy Day
ELA 9 - This morning students presented the partners they interviewed last week. It was great to hear some new information about the students in grade nine. They were entertaining and well done!
PAA 8 - We worked on a safety poster this class. We will continue to work on these next class, and review for our unit one safety test we will have next week.

We continued class after with correcting our Canadian Constitution questions that were due for today. We also worked on filling out a sheet based on social organization, power and decision making.

Welcome back after the long weekend! Hopefully it was an enjoyable time. Glad to see a Rider victory! Wahoo!
Here are some updates for today:
ELA 9 - We listened to the song "Who I Am" by Jessica Andrews and did a response based on the lyrics. This song lead us into the discussion of family and their importance to making us who we are. We also shared embarrassing moments that our family has put us through :) Some hilarious stories! We prepared, also, for reading "The Jade Peony", a short story that shares the importance of grandparents, and the experiences we have with them. REMINDER that tomorrow our partner presentations are due tomorrow. Be ready to present!

Four Down, One to Go
ELA 9 - Students interviewed each other and put their information into paragraphs to be presented to the class. The paragraphs are due tomorrow if they were not finished in class. We will rehearse the paragraphs tomorrow and present them next week.

ELA 9 - This morning we worked on finishing up a written draft of our "I Am" poems and worked on coming up with 20 questions for a class interview which we will be conducting tomorrow. The 20 questions, if they did not get finished in class, are due for tomorrow's class.
HLTH 9 - We started by going through the course outline and then started our unit one topic: Leadership, Health Promotion, and Decision Making. We started by discussing the many ways one can be healthy, and took some notes on the 12 Determinants of Health.
SOC 9 - We continued our conversation of worldview, and now students are creating an assignment where they have to state their own worldview. They are working on coming up with a rough draft of their thoughts and opinions. Students also typed up their "I Am" poems this period.
SOC 10 - We finished up our discussion of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and students then worked on a response which is due tomorrow!!!!
CND 30 - After tying up our discussion of Change, students did a response to be handed in. We then started the Dialectic Process.

Rain Rain GO AWAY!
A rainy second day of school :(
ELA 9 - We started class by going through the course outline, and checking out what our first unit, titled "In Search of Self", is all about. We had some discussion about identity, and then started our first assignment: a poem titled "I Am".
PAA 9 - Sewing Class! We did a worksheet on small equipment used for sewing. Students are asked to bring a sewing kit filled with sewing supplies. A list has been given to take home.

WELCOME BACK
Welcome back students and parents of LHS!!! Once again I am going to be using a blog to update both parents and students of the happening in my classes, and at LHS. My goal is to update as often as possible to ensure you have up to date information. Please email me with questions or concerns you may have.

Finals are upon us!!!!
The last day of classes for Sr. Students is tomorrow. We are wrapping up our units and preparing for exams.
ELA 9 - We have worked very hard on getting our Romeo and Juliet soundtracks done! These were done with great creativity and thought!!! The final products turned out fabulously, and the process of connecting the songs to the scenes in the play turned out quite well!
HLTH 9 - We have finished up our Sex. Ed. unit.
SOC 9 - We spent some time finishing up our assingnments on First Nations spirituality and treaties.
SOC 10 - After working on unit five research essays, students have finished up their information on international trade. We have been reviewing for the final as well.
ELA 20 - Students are finishing up their radio scripts.

Thursday, May 6, Day 2
ELA 9 - We have been working on Romeo and Juliet for the last week. We are finished Act I, and are working on Act II. Students have been filling out scene logs and character analysis as we have been reading.
HLTH 9 - Students have been working on a human sized collage based on abuse and dating violence. We have been discussing the different types of abuse there are, along with date rape.
SOC 9 - We have been learning about the various beliefs of Ancient China, along with the respect for the ancestors. Also, we are currently looking at the many types of arts, and crafts of the culture. Just today, a read aloud book has been started, called "Bound" which is about a woman's experience growing up in Ancient China.
SOC 10 - After finishing up information on the OKA crisis, we presented our role plays today. These showed the many perspectives of the crisis. We are now finishing up the unit with the topic of women's rights.
ELA 20 - Tomorrow is our TKAM test! Students are currently working on their research essay assignment.

ELA 9 - We have started Romeo and Juliet this week. After going through information on Shakespeare and the Globe Theatre, we read the prologue from the play, and spent time looking at Shakespearean vocabulary. Students also were handed back their research essays. They did a good job on these large writing projects.
PAA 8 - We made sugar cookies today!
SOCIAL 9 *** Reminder that the Foot Binding comparison paragraphs are due TOMORROW (Wednesday, April 28th)
SOC 10 - Our class had a discussion today based on culture, sovereignty, and government. We will be starting a section on Treaty Land Claims tomorrow.

It's been a busy last month, with drama regionals, Easter break, Europe Trip, and report cards. Sorry for the lack of updates. Here is some current news for my classes:
ELA 9 - We are working on the Love and Loyalty unit. We have talked about relationships, including parents, friends, and boyfriends/girlfriends. We are soon starting Romeo and Juliet, and have done an inquiry on William Shakespeare which we will be going through on Monday's class.
HLTH 9 - We have started our dating unit, and have looked specifically at the history of dating, and what it looks like present day. Students are creating a timeline to show progression.
SOC 9 - Our unit on Ancient China has lead us to the topic of foot binding. Students created a comparison paragraph where they took a painful yet 'beautifying' procedure (i.e. plastic surgery, corsets, etc) and compared it to the act of foot binding.
PAA 9 - Students have finished up their mini pillows and have been preparing for the design projects. students need to bring their materials asap for the project.
PAA 8 - We are currently working on a cookie unit - delicious!

HLTH 9 - We worked on our HIV/AIDS response today. This will be due next health class which is Thursday the 25th.
SOC 9 - We went through our review today. We will continue to review on Tuesday, and will have the unit test on Thursday the 25th.
SOC 10 - Students finished up their International Research project poster.

ELA 9 - We worked on our research essays today, by reading the many articles and filling out a FQR (Facts, Questions, Response) chart. Most of the students also got to view their freedom speeches from last week that we video taped.
HLTH 9 - We read Chanda's Secrets the entire class - we are almost done!
SOC 9 - This class we spent time typing up our Inca travel letters.
PAA 9 - Yesterday we went through the small equipment information sheet. We will be having test tomorrow (Thursday).
SOC 10 - We worked on mapping out the top ten and lowest ten countries on the HDI Index. This will visually show the standard of living for various countries in the world.
ELA 20 - PEP Rally!!!! Today students had to hand in either a fairytale essay OR their children's story book.

SOC 9 - After reading several chapters of Chanda's Secrets, we worked on our Inca travel letters.
SOC 10 - We started our new unit "Economic Decision Making" today. We did a quick activity on the wealth of the world (using pennies, and some aggressive behaviour :0 ) and then discussed the topic of scarcity.
ELA 20 - We spent the hour working on either fairytale essays or storybooks. ONE of these two projects is due on Wednesday's class.

SOC 9 - After finishing up information on the Spanish Conquest, we worked on planning for our final project - two travel letters written from the perspective of an Incan citizen. We will also be preparing for our unit test next week.
PAA 8 - We worked on recipe conversions, parts of a recipe, and kitchen tools. We will start cooking in a couple classes.
SOC 10 - Students did their unit one test today!! Minority posters will be due on Tuesday of next week.

ELA 9 - We have been working away on our speeches, song analysis (which were due today), and our Holocaust book talks. Our speeches will be due next week - practice, practice, practice!!!
HLTH 9 - Once again we read Chanda's Secrets. The story is getting very interesting!! Just a reminder that the AIDS/HIV survey was due today - many of the surveys did NOT come in today, and students have until next Tuesday to hand them in. Unfortunately, late marks will apply.
SOC 9 - We have spent time this week looking at Machu Picchu and the many wonders and beauties of it. We also started a section on Creating and Entertaining in the Inca culture. We have one more topic and then will have a unit test.

SOC 10 - After the discussion of renegotiating social contracts, students are working on a project that looks at the minority groups in Canada, and how their voices are heard. They will have a bit more time next week to work on these poster projects and will have a test late next week.

SOC 9 - Today we watched a video on the creation of Machu Picchu. We will discuss the video next day.
TOMORROW all grade nines will be involved in a career guidance workshop all morning.

ELA 9 - We have worked hard on creating a rough draft of our "I Believe Freedom is..." speech. We will work on rehearsing and presenting these after the break. A HUGE reminder: Holocaust novels need to be finished after the break. Also, questions numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,13, 7, 16,17, 18, 19, and 20 are due as well.
HLTH 9 - Students are expected to have their HIV/AIDS survey questions administered over the break.
SOC 9 - Students worked on the daily life on Incas, and will work more on that topic after the break.

ELA 9 - We have been working on a speech entitled "I Believe Freedom Is..." Students are combining beliefs, opinions, quotes, and historical situations to create a speech where they express their ideas on freedom.
PAA 9 - We worked on how to tie a knot and the running stitch.
SOC 9 - Students have been working on a visual representation of Inca gods and goddesses. They will have more class time to work on this challenging assignment.
HLTH 9 - We are working on a survey based on AIDS/HIV discrimination. This will be administered this week some time.
SOC 10 - Students have been discussing the topic of power and decision making in Social Organizations, as well as conflict. They are also working on treaty questions.
ELA 20 - Students did a two column response that dealt with the topic of parents. They have also been working on a childhood poem.

Wednesday, February 3, Day 2
ELA 9 - Students have been working on a short story, Montreal 1962, along with doing some proofreading and editing.
HLTH 9 - Today we finished the movie Philadelphia, and had some great discussions about AIDS, and the discrimination that comes with it.
SOC 10 - We worked on a response for social contracts and then did a survival simulation to look at working as an individual and a group.
ELA 20 - After doing a childhood poetry response, students worked on creating their own childhood poetry.

Monday, Feb. 1, Day 6
Welcome to a new semester!!!
ELA 9 - We spent some time finishing up our two column writing assignment which we will proofread tomorrow, and then read our Holocaust books.
PAA 8 - Today we looked at the course outline and then started our first unit: safety.
SOC 9 -We worked on creating notes for the Inca Religion, and started viewing the assignment on Inca gods and goddesses.
SOC 10 - After looking at the course outline, we started learning about the topic of Social Organizations.
ELA 20 - Once done going through the course outline, we spent some time sharing childhood memories.

Wednesday, January 27, Day 4
ELA 9 - After listening to the short play, "The Fighting Days", students created two short articles dealing with the topic of women's rights. They are also reading/responding to their Holocaust books.
HLTH 9 - We started the movie "Philadelphia" today, dealing with the topic of Aids and discrimination.
SOC 9 - After finishing up our section on Inca Government, we started reading up on Inca Religion.
PAA 9 - Projects are due TOMORROW!!!!
ELA 20 and CND 30 - Finals are now finished! Wahoo!

Thursday, Jan 21, Day 6
As semester one winds down a lot has been happening:
ELA 9 - We have had some awesome discussions about human rights. Students took part in learning about a human rights issue (death penalty, child slavery, Rwandan Genocide) and after presenting it to the class conducted a discussion based on questions they came up with. Very thoughtful discussions. We are still working on reading our Holocaust novels as well.
HLTH 9 - Last class students were part of a 'survey' that allowed them to think about their own prejudices and feelings towards AIDS/HIV and those who have the infection. We are also reading a novel called "Chanda's Secrets" which is about a young girl from Africa dealing with AIDS in her family.
SOC 9 - We worked on a chart and questions based on Inca government, army, and economy. We will be correcting the questions next day, Tuesday the 26th.
PAA 9 - We have been working like mad on our sewing projects. Only one more class to finish up!
PAA 8 - Our second last class involved as making a good old "Country Breakfast" - very delicious. Our last class tomorrow is a clean up and work period.
ELA 20 - We have been finishing up our resumes and cover letters, as well as our radio scrips which are due on Friday the 22nd. The final is on Tuesday the 26th at 1:00.
CND 30 - Students have been finishing up their Constitution timelines which are due on Friday the 22nd, and the dialectics due Wed. the 27. The final is also on Wed. at 1:00

ELA 9 - We started reading our Holocaust novels today.
PAA 8 - We did an assignment on the Canadian Food Guide and students have a homework assignment to do that has them record what they eat in a single day. This will be due next day 6.

Wednesday, January 13, Day 6
ELA 9 - We watched part three of Witness: Voices of the Holocaust and had some great discussion surrounding the video.
PAA 8 - We cooked up some French Toast today! Delicious!
SOC 9 - After going through the various people involved in the Inca empire we read up on family life and growing up in the Incan Empire.
ELA 20 - After hearing the rest of the valedictorian speeches, we had a work period to organize our panel discussions due on Friday as well our research essays.
CND 30 - We worked on our timeline assignment today. Constitution questions are also due on Friday.

Tuesday, January 12, Day 5
ELA 9 - After our "Eagle of the Month" assembly we had a chance to look through the various Holocaust books Mrs. Katchin pulled from our resource center shelves. After perusing the book, and checking out some reviews, students picked their top five books they would be interested in reading for our Independent Novel Study assignment.
PAA 9 - Students worked away at their hand sewing and design projects. Only a couple more classes to finish up!!!!
ELA 20 - Students did a GREAT job today of presenting their valedictorian speeches!!! We will hear the rest of them tomorrow. Reminder that the panel discussions will be presented on Friday. Also, a final draft of the research essay is due on Friday. Novels need to be finished by Monday.

Monday, January 11, Day 4
ELA 9 - We watched part two of the "Witness" documentary on the Holocaust today.
HLTH 9 - Students had time to work on their AIDS and discrimination questions which are due on Friday the 18th.
SOC 9 - We reviewed the creation story of the Incas and then started reading up on the many levels of people involved in the Empire. Both the creations posters and the handout are due on Wednesday the 13th.
ELA 20 - Students had the hour to work on their valedictorian speeches which are due TOMORROW!!! Also this week the panel discussion and final drafts of the research essays will be due.
SOC 30 - We worked on the problems with the constitution in today's class.

ELA 9 - Today we looked up some vocabulary relating to the Holocaust. We started watching "Witnesses" a documentary about the Holocaust. We finished part one and have three more to watch. We also had a response to do along with the video.
HLTH 9 - We started our new unit today: "HIV/AIDS". After discussion of the background knowledge on the topic, we worked on a handout that discusses discrimination and the stigma surrounding people with HIV/AIDS.

Wednesday, Jan. 6, Day 1
ELA 9 - Today we discussed the issue of standing up for others. We talked about bullying, what people can do to stand up for others and themselves, and why it is important to do so. We then started making connections to standing up for others and the Holocaust. We will be watching an eye-opening documentary which includes many stories of survivors of Holocaust survivors.
PAA 8 - Pancakes and crepes were made today! Delicious!!!
ELA 20 - We started doing our Valedictorian speeches today. We analyzed other speeches from former Valedictorians, and then came up with some of the common characteristics of the speeches, as well as ways to make them stand out or be personalized. We also had time to read our novels which will be due in a couple weeks time.
SOC 30 - We corrected our questions on Canadian government and the constitution. We also started looking at the Confederation.

Happy New Year!!!

ELA 9 - We started a new unit called "Doing the Right Thing". So far we have had discussions about morals, and read a short story called "The Taste of Melon". Students worked on a response to the story, which is due on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
PAA 9 - We have been working hard on our hand sewing and design projects. Only four more classes to work on them - they are due Jan. 20th.
PAA 8 - Students made some delicious muffins and bannock in class! Next and final unit: Breakfast.
SOC 9 - We started a new unit on the Incan Empire today. We did some map labeling, and found out some ways in which archaeologists and historians know about the Incas today. EVERYONE learned something new today!!!
